Travelogue Summer School is pleased to announce that applications are now open for our first summer programme taking place on August 3–8, 2015 at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto (PT).

Travelogue Summer School is a one-week forum for debate and collaborative practice dedicated to professionals and students in the fields of design, architecture, arts and related disciplines.

Through a psychogeographic deconstruction of the urban environment, Travelogue Summer School aims to investigate the city through a type of ‘fieldwork’ comprised of a stimulating programme of guided tours, talks and workshops run by multidisciplinary practitioners. Based upon these experiences, the summer school will culminate in a publication where participants will collaborate on a unique guidebook about the city. The goal of the guidebook will be to envision an account of Porto that serves as an alternative to the official national narratives and eulogising language so often found in travel literature in order to reimagine the urban arena as a space to question social and political relations.

We encourage applications from Portuguese and international applicants who are fascinated by the exploration of urban space, share a genuine desire to work collaboratively and are interested in advancing their work in a unique context.

The University of Minnesota Center for German and European Studies in collaboration with European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) Germany is pleased to announce the 2015 Trans-Atlantic Summer Institute for advanced graduate students.

Emotions in Late Modern Societies: Persons, Politics, and Social Practices

The social sciences depart from the assumption that human action emanates from rational beings who activate material resources and use available role models in order to reach their goals. In such a perspective, people appear as individuals who act in accordance with their potential in a goal-oriented society – the core of modern or late modern narratives. Beneath these assumptions have often been a whole range of value judgments, such as claims about rationality being male, strong, and public while emotions are female, weak, and private. The humanities, in contrast, have traditionally paid more attention to expressive works that are understood to explore evolving worlds of feeling and flows of experience.

TASI 2015 invites graduate students from the US and Europe to convene for two weeks of examination of the subject of emotions in social behavior and practice. We are interested most of all in assembling a group of emerging scholars who bring interdisciplinary commitments and concerns to their work, and who are interested in sharing their work with their peers internationally.

Where: the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany

When: July 20 - August 1, 2015

The Center for German & European Studies will provide North American graduate students with a $750 stipend towards their travel expenses. European students will receive travel aids of $150. Room and board at the European University Viadrina are free of charge.

Between 1970 and 2007 alone, the world saw 425 systemic economic crises, among them 145 sector-wide banking crises. In the light of current events one might start to wonder whether this apparently inherent instability might actually be reduced, even if there is sufficient public intent. Yet, at the same time, the global effects of population growth, resource exploitation and environmental degradation force us to think about long-term change. This leaves the question: What is the actual leeway for reform? If you have been asking yourself how our world could look like or how to contribute yourself, you might be interested in one of our academic summer programs:

  • AEMS: The Summer School Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (5 ECTS) approaches the topic of economic alternatives by considering natural boundaries and the human factor to be equal parts of the equation. In addition to various new and classical concepts from the field of economic sciences, students are also provided with up-to-date scientific data from natural and social sciences. The goal: Help solve some of society’s problems by presenting viable alternatives to processes and developments that are putting enormous strains on economic, ecologic and social boundaries.
  • G.B.S.: Green.Building.Solutions. (7 ECTS) is a 3-week master level program for students (and professionals) that concentrates on energy-efficiency, ecological building and planning, a “hot” topic, so to speak, for architects, engineers and economists as well as marketers and project developers. The program offers first hand ecological knowledge and engineering expertise – all combined with outstanding experience, know-how and best-practice examples.

Both programs are located in the capital of energy efficiency and green building: Vienna. As a bonus, students will be able to experience the effects of energy-efficient architecture first-hand by living in one of Austria's most modern dormitories. You can find more information about our programs at

Every year we welcome about fifty young Europeans from 28 member countries and third countries. The Young Citizens' Convention is an unconventional summer school whose central theme is Europe and the European Union. As an area of democratic exchange, the Convention offers participants the opportunity to discuss their future, to exchange with other young Europeans and to achieve a common project through an approach based on mutual respect and listening. We wish to draw your attention to the launch of our 15th edition with the theme “Europe on the menu: food, culture, agriculture - what recipes for the future?”. We join you a call for applications to the event.
