“Facultad Cero”: A participatory approach to redesigning the UGR.

10/04/2018

The overall aim of the “Facultad Cero” Process can be summed up with a simple question: “How would you design your university if you could start from scratch?” If this crucial question interests you, and you wish to contribute to rethinking and redesigning the University, you can sign up to take part in the “Facultad Cero” Process until Tuesday 10 April 2018.

What is the “Facultad Cero” Process?

The “Facultad Cero” Process, which is open to members of the UGR community and society at large, invites us to rethink and redesign the University of Granada in two ways:

1. by identifying and debating areas in need of improvement; and

2. by generating specific proposals for our University and its environment.

The process will consist of a series of meetings and design laboratories, bringing together students, Administrative and Support Staff (PAS), Academic and Research Staff (PDI) and citizens, with the goal of co-creating proposals and prototypes that contribute to improving the University of Granada and the way in which it relates to its environment.

So far, 37 different laboratories have been proposed and will take place on the 13, 20 and 27 April. Specifically, the labs aim to improve how the University manages a highly broad set of issues, such as sexual identities and gender; student-teacher relations; accessibility and diversity; the integration of international students; employability; transparency; and environmental issues, among others. The laboratories will also tackle perplexing questions such as: How can the University improve student participation and representation? How can we include children more effectively in the university environment? How can we enhance the language skills of students, staff, and society? How can we exploit the University’s potential as a music hub?

During the labs, participants will have the opportunity to diagnose and define the challenges that the UGR currently faces, generating ideas and developing innovative prototypes designed to tackle these challenges. The viability of implementing these prototypes at the UGR will then be studied. Each lab will be composed of at least 8 individuals from different backgrounds.

When will it take place?

“Facultad Cero” was officially launched on 21 March 2018 with a creative thinking workshop for redesigning the University and presentations of specific projects and ideas for the laboratories.

The next phase of the project, which is open to all members of the university community and the public, will be held on the 13, 20 and 27 April and will consist of laboratories in which participants will collectively design and develop proposals.

14 May 2018 -> “Facultad Cero” Forum Exchange of proposals, round tables and debates about the Process.

Why is it different from other participatory processes?

• Because it is a forum for students, research and academic staff, administrative and support staff, and is open to all citizens.

• Because your ideas and proposals will be heard by the University, which will adopt them, or justify why they cannot do so at this time.

• Because your ideas have value and are the means by which we can construct a better university.

• Because it is an opportunity to create a more participatory and democratic university.

• Because it is an opportunity to develop networks of individuals with common interests.
