The University of Granada (UGR) recently took part in the international Study in Spain Fair in Colombia, a leading promotional event on higher education (HE) held every year in Latin America. The fair aims to promote the academic programmes of Spanish universities among students from across the continent.

Colombia is a priority country in the context of the internationalization of the Spanish HE system, given that Spain receives more students from Colombia than from any other country. In addition, the two countries reached a formal agreement on the mutual recognition of qualifications in May 2023 in order to foster greater access to their respective HE systems. These factors have helped to make Spain the number one foreign destination for Colombian students.

Nearly 2,000 people attended the fair, which took place on 10, 12 and 14 March in Medellín, Cali and Bogotá, the three main cities of origin among these students. The Spanish Service for the Internationalization of Education (SEPIE) took part in the organisation of the activities, helping to boost the visibility of the participating Spanish universities.

During the three-day event, the UGR stand received over 400 visitors. Staff from the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization presented the institution’s wide range of academic programmes (both undergraduate and postgraduate), as well as information on how to apply, entrance examinations, mobility programmes, fees, accommodation, and everything else needed to help prospective students plan their stay at our university.

Brochures, guides and promotional materials were distributed at the stand, generating significant interest among students and making the UGR information point one of the most popular at the fair.

In addition, the UGR delegation delivered an institutional presentation to students and families, highlighting the main advantages of studying at our university, including our academic track record, the quality of our teaching and research, our internationalization activities, and the services and resources available to students during their mobility period. The presentation also covered the cultural richness and quality of life that Granada has to offer.

The UGR’s participation at the fair served to reinforce our internationalization strategy and to strengthen the academic and cultural ties that we have maintained for decades with Latin America, a region with which we share extensive historical and linguistic connections. The UGR is one of the most proactive institutions in the international promotion of higher education.

The University was represented at the fair by Irene Pedreira Romero, Director for International Projects and Networks, and África Mariñas del Río, an administrative officer at the UGR’s International Relations Office.
