Erasmus Mundus 2009-2013

Logo Erasmus MundusThe overall objective of the Erasmus Mundus II programme is to improve the quality of higher education in Europe, contribute to improving and boosting the professional prospects of students, foster intercultural understanding through cooperation with third countries and contribute to the sustained development of third countries in the field of higher education.

In order to achieve these objectives, the Erasmus Mundus Il programme provides the following activities:

  • Action 1: Joint Erasmus Mundus Programmes. The objective of this action is to promote postgraduate programmes of outstanding academic quality, developed in conjunction with European university consortia and, if appropriate, with third countries, with the ability to make programmes more prominent and more attractive to the European higher education sector. These joint programmes must involve mobility between universities in the consortium and lead to participants gaining a recognised double, multiple or joint qualification. Action 1 is made up of two sub-components:
    • Action 1A: Erasmus Mundus Master's Courses (EMMC)
    • Action 1B: Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD)
  • Action 2: Erasmus Mundus Associations. In order to implement this action, consortia made up of higher education institutions in Europe and third countries will be set up. These will provide the basis for structured cooperation, exchanges and mobility at all levels of higher education, including a grants programme. The Erasmus Mundus associations are a continuation of the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EMECW) programme.
  • Action 3: Promotion projects. The objective of these projects is to promote European higher education in ways that make Europe more attractive as an educational destination and as a worldwide centre of excellence.
