The kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ CBHE project MED.HELA (Mediterranean Higher Education Leadership Academy) took place in Tlemcen, Algeria, on 20–21 January 2026. The event was hosted by the project coordinator, the University of Tlemcen, and was attended by representatives from the Algerian and Tunisian Ministries of Higher Education, as well as the Director of the Erasmus+ Office in Algeria.

MED.HELA is a three-year project that aims to strengthen leadership capacities in Algerian and Tunisian higher education institutions. The project addresses key systemic gaps in university governance, strategic planning and institutional management. It seeks to respond to nationally identified reform priorities and to boost ministerial involvement, evidence-based leadership frameworks, and European experiences in higher education leadership development. The project involves partners from Algeria, Tunisia, Ireland, Slovenia, and Spain.

The two-day meeting marked the start of project implementation and brought partners together to align on objectives, activities, and implementation plans. All project partners demonstrated a high level of engagement and commitment to the joint development of a comprehensive Leadership Development Programme.

The project partners will meet again in Slovenia from 30 March to 2 April 2026 as part of a four-day research visit. The visit, hosted by EMUNI University (Slovenia), will focus on the further development of the leadership programme and related project activities.

MED.HELA is one of six Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) projects in which the University of Granada is currently participating. It has a total budget of €990,891.36 and will be implemented over three years.
