Introduction
The University of Granada is a public university located in the historical city of Granada, just 35km from the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountain range and 65km from the tropical Mediterranean coast. Founded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V, it is one of the most prestigious universities in Europe in terms of its historical importance. Moreover, the UGR’s satellite campuses in the North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla make it the only European university with campuses on two continents.
Our institution is now one of the most international universities in Europe, topping many international mobility rankings at both national and European level. Approximately 6,000 international undergraduate, master's and doctoral students study at the UGR every year, making it a truly multicultural study destination.
The UGR is home to over 60,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, with another 10,000 enrolled in complementary courses, language courses, summer courses, and more. The teaching staff consists of 3,500 lecturers, working alongside over 2,000 members of the technical, management, administrative and support staff (PTGAS).
Moreover, the University of Granada welcomes over 2,000 Erasmus students every year, making it one of the most popular Erasmus destinations in Europe. It is considered a privileged destination in Spain by international students and was awarded the prestigious International Student Satisfaction Award (Gold) by StudyPortals in 2013. The UGR also sends more Erasmus students to universities abroad each year than almost any other European higher education institution.
The University of Granada maintains an extensive network of bilateral and multilateral alliances, with over 1,000 active international cooperation agreements, and holds important positions in international university networks and alliances, such as the Arqus European University Alliance (of which it is the coordinating member), the Coimbra Group, the AUIP, and the Tordesillas Group.
In the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the most prestigious and influential international ranking of its kind, the UGR has steadily improved its position over the past ten years, climbing a total of 200 positions. In 2022, it was the second highest ranked university in Spain.
