Erasmus students of non-EU nationality coming from EU Universities
In these cases, the University itself will provide the details of students undertaking mobilities within the framework of European mobility programmes such as Erasmus+ directly to the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. Students with non-EU nationality coming from EU universities will be exempt from the visa requirement for the duration of their stay in Spain.
Once you have received your letter of acceptance to the University of Granada, you must send an email to intlinfo@ugr.es, attaching copies of the following documents in PDF format:
- Your passport
- Your residence permit (both sides) issued in the EU country where your home university is located. It must be valid for the whole period of your stay at the University of Granada.
You must also complete this form, which will ask you for details including your address and telephone number in Granada.
Non-EU students from non-EU universities
In order to enter and remain in Spain as a student, you must apply for a study visa at the Spanish diplomatic mission or consulate in the country or region of you reside.
To apply for a study visa, you will need to submit at least the following documents:
- Passport.
- Proof of admission or pre-registration in an officially recognised educational or research centre.
- Content of the curriculum.
- Health insurance.
- Criminal record certificate issued by the relevant authorities of your home country or country of residence.
- Proof of sufficient financial resources to cover your studies and stay.
If the visa you have obtained for entry into Spain is for less than 180 days, you do not have to go to the Immigration Office. The Spanish diplomatic mission will have already assigned you a Foreign National Identification Number (NIE) on your visa, so your registration is already complete. You can use this number to identify yourself for any procedures you need to carry out in Spain.
Once in Spain, if your study period is going to be for more than 6 months, you must apply for a Foreigner Identity Card (TIE).
If the visa you have obtained is a long-term visa, i.e. for more than 180 days, then you will have to request an appointment online at the Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería) in Granada to obtain your residence permit or TIE, which will include your Foreign National Identification Number (NIE).
To obtain this card, you will need to go to the Immigration Office within 30 days of having entered Spain. To make an appointment, click here. Select the province (Granada) and choose the option “TRÁMITES POLICÍA NACIONAL – POLICÍA-TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA)”. You will be required to present the following documents:
- Duly completed and signed application form EX-17
- Passport and visa: Original and photocopies (x2) of the pages showing your passport number, visa and the entry stamp.
- A copy of your health insurance policy.
- One recent passport-size colour photo on a white background.
- OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY STUDENT CREDENTIALS (issued by the UGR) and enrolment document (resguardo de matrícula).
- Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (Tasa 790). To pay the fee (€16.08), select the option “TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal”, print the payment form, and take it to any bank to pay in cash.
Keep the receipt/proof of payment you receive as it will act as your provisional residence card. The card itself will arrive approximately one month later, and you will have to pick it up at the same Immigration Office. To do so, you will need to make a new appointment: Select the province (Granada) and choose the option “TRÁMITES POLICÍA NACIONAL – POLICÍA-RECOGIDA DE TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO TIE”.
Extending your mobility period in Spain
If your studies last for more than one year, you must apply for and obtain an extension to your residence permit. To do so, it is important to submit the application at least sixty days before your current permit expires. However, if your permit does expire, you will have 90 calendar days to submit the application, without prejudice to the initiation of the corresponding sanctioning process. If you apply after this period, your application will be rejected and you will have to apply for a new visa.
When applying for an extension, you will need to submit the following documents:
- Extension application form in duplicate.
- Copy of your previous identity card.
- Valid passport.
- A copy of your health insurance policy (including coverage for repatriation)
- Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the costs of your stay and return to your country and, if applicable, those of your family members (grants, family income, etc.).
- Accreditation proving that you are entitled to continue your studies (academic certificate).
Once the authorisation has been granted, you will have one month to apply for your new Foreign National Identity Card (TIE).
